TASK 6. "GAMES" - Journalist
JOURNALIST: Sofía Lorente García
Tuesday, 8 March 2022:
First day, we brought the board games to class and we talked about the objectives and how it was played in each one and we played with each other. We talked about board games, strategies, objectives, dynamics, participants... All this made us familiar with the board games and the topic we were going to work on during the next few days. We brought 3 games, two of them Lidia and one Sandra and we had a great time playing. The games were “Conociendo España” and “Hedbanz”.
Wednesday, 9 March 2022:
That day we got into a web page that the teacher taught us to inspire us to create our game in it appeared randomly examples of games and subjects and we were thinking how to do it.That day we had many ideas but we did not know how to take them into practice, the teacher gave us an example that inspired us and from there we knew what to do and talked about everything we needed to bring for the next day to start creating everything.
Friday, 11 March 2022:
We had to buy the materials because the person who had them was sick and could not come to class. This was an inconvenience but in the end we overcame it, we worked very well, we were productive and we left everything almost finished. We made the dice that we had to translate because it was in Spanish and also the domino, we finished the game board and Lidia took it to his house to color it. We realized how important it is for everyone to collaborate and help because otherwise it is too much work.
Saturday, 12 March 2022:
We continue working from home with Google Documents in the explanation and instructions of the game. We wanted the explanation to be as clear as possible.
Tuesday, 15 March 2022:
Today, we have tested the game that we have created among the members of the group. This has been a great help as we have realized the things that needed to be changed and all together we have been contributing ideas so that the final result is the best possible.
Some of the things we have questioned were for example: if the dominoes had a vocabulary that was too difficult for the children to understand, we have also decided that we will bring an hourglass to time each mini game, we have also agreed that the player who throws the dice and gets the highest number will start the game, among many other things.
The game was quite good but when we tried it out we realized these things and this session seemed very useful and necessary for the final result of the task.
As we were very committed to the success of this task, one of our colleagues, Lidia, tried out the game with a real fifth grader.
The child was able to play without any problems and said that he had a great time. He also said that he liked the part of the questions and talking and expressing his ideas, so we are very happy because on Wednesday we are going to play with our classmates but they are not real children, so a positive feedback from a real child has motivated us a lot and we are very excited to show it tomorrow.
Wednesday, 16 March 2022:
Today was the day of the final presentation of our game to a class group. We were very excited because it has been, in our opinion, one of the most laborious tasks and we had put a lot of effort into creating this game so we wanted it to go well and we wanted them to like it.
Sandra, the star of our group, explained and played the game with them and then told us the impressions of the Coconut group.
They thought it was very well done and that the part about expressing their opinions and talking about feelings was the best part. And we agree with this, as we think that as future teachers we not only have to teach facts, data and content but also have to work on many more competences that are also in the curriculum. Learning to recognise your emotions, express them and communicate your opinion and feelings seems to us to be very important at this age so we are very proud to have chosen and created this game that hopefully we can use one day in a classroom or with our cousins or siblings.
Although there were many good things in our game, we also realized that the domino part of the game was too long and should be changed to something quicker to do.
As for the Puzzle team game we have played, most of the feedback we have given to Alba, the star of your group, has been very positive. The game has been very entertaining, fun, the children will learn a lot of characters they surely didn't know and we have enjoyed playing a lot. It is true that, for example, as it is a game related to historical characters, the children either know them or not, so they are not creating, analyzing and reflecting on anything, they are just remembering and recognising them.
In conclusion, it has been a great experience to create a game, we have realized all the work involved behind it, all the imagination you have to have and all the elements you have to take into account. Our game may not have been the most fun but we are sure that they have learnt something about emotions, which is a very important topic for life in general. Throughout the development of the game there have been many changes in the epistemic, social, and set design and we have tried to adjust as much as possible to the assessment criteria we had chosen. We have found it a very enriching experience because when we become teachers we want to use all the resources we can so that it is not all direct instruction and that the children do not get bored and learn not only content but also useful things for their lives such as the management of emotions.
Although we have all developed the same task and we had to create a game, I find very interesting the approach that each colleague gives and the truth is that you learn a lot by observing the work of others in class, in their blogs, on Instagram... It has seemed to us a task very related to our work in the future, very useful and we have had a great time doing it.
This week the groups we liked the most were: the “Coconut Group” and "Study Buddies". Coconut Group made a very interesting game about different cultures like the Egyptians and the Romans and it was like “Monopoly”. The content they worked on was very interesting and aesthetically we liked it a lot. In general all the games in the class surprised us and we tried to give everyone sincere but at the same time positive feedback to keep them motivated. It has been one of the tasks we have enjoyed the most and we hope to do more of this style. Link to coconut’s blog: https://sites.google.com/view/coconutgroup/homepage
And finally we wanted to show this page that we found outside the class, very interesting and related to the task we have done, it exposes the importance of play in schools and its benefits among many other things:
