TASK 3. "TACCLE ACTIVITY" - TRANSLATOR
TRANSLATOR: SANDRA AND NOELIA
WIKIPEDIA: As for its meaning, the word Wikipedia is composed of the prefix wiki, the Hawaiian word for "fast", and the term encyclopedia. Wikipedia is run by the Wikimedia Foundation. The non-profit foundation was established in 2003 by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. Since 2011 there is also Wikimedia Spain.
Wikipedia is run by the Wikimedia Foundation. The non-profit foundation was created in 2003 by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. Since 2011 there is also Wikimedia Spain. Anyone can create new Wikipedia articles or suggest corrections to existing articles. To do so, an author does not even have to be registered on Wikipedia.
Articles on new topics can be created relatively easily. Wikipedia gives many tips that especially help beginners in writing a new entry.
The style guide can be found at: es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_de_estilo
For each article there is a discussion forum, where Wikipedia users can submit suggestions for editing. In addition, they can also edit the articles directly. Afterwards, the changes are checked and if the information is accepted, they are published in the main entry.
DIGITAL: Digital is that which relates to the fingers (the extremities of the hands and feet of the human being). The concept, however, is nowadays closely linked to technology and computing to refer to the representation of information in binary form (in two states).
Digital systems (such as computers) use a two-state logic that is represented by two electrical voltage levels: high (high or H) and low (low or L). As an abstraction, these states are replaced by ones and zeros, facilitating the application of logic and arithmetic.
CROSS CURRICULAR:
Cross-curricular learning involves establishing patterns of information between different academic subjects. It offers a creative way of developing knowledge, understanding and practical skills through a study of interconnected topics. A common way of expanding knowledge on a specific subject is to study the history of that topic and apply that learning to other teaching lessons.
Cross-curricular learning allows for more inter-connected lessons that capture your students' imagination. It also enables them to identify patterns of information between subjects that will help to enforce key knowledge. Good cross-curricular learning can involve a wide variety of different subjects, but it more usually relies upon links between only a couple of key subjects. Making sure the links between lessons are natural and not forced is key to a successful cross-curricular learning strategy.
PECHAKUCHA:
PechaKucha’s 20x20 presentation format shows your 20 chosen images, each for 20 seconds. In other words, you've got 400 seconds to tell your story, with visuals guiding the way. PechaKucha means "chit chat" in Japanese. This creative outlet began as nighttime get-togethers in Tokyo in 2003 by two renowned architects. Since then, three million people have attended PechaKucha events worldwide.
PB WORK:
PB work is an online resource that allows you to capture knowledge, share files, and manage projects within a secure, reliable environment.
Specific question:
Weaknesses of the topic, methodology and the tool of the task.
As for the weaknesses of the task, there have been both advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of this activity I consider that are to be the great importance given to the students' activities and in this case to wikipedia, something that we consider fundamental for children to start looking for information on the internet, and we believe that there is no better way to teach a child a website than making it themselves.
The weakness of the activity from my point of view has been the time spent in developing the wikipedia and the tool (PBwork) used to make it. As we may have not made a really good choice of the activity, maybe there was another option much more easier to develop. But finally it has been well prepared.
The tool used, PBworks, to perform the activity has also been a small problem, since it cost us to get familiar with this document format, thus deleting several times the data of the document. We had a hard time dividing all the different questions that were asked about volcanoes. We chose this topic because we all liked it and we thought that we would have a lot of different information about this same topic since it has many different parts.
